Radio Lobes of Pictor A: an X-ray spatially resolved Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new XMM-Newton observation has made possible a detailed study of both lobes of the radio galaxy Pictor A. Their X-ray emission is of non thermal origin and due to Inverse Compton scattering of the microwave background photons by relativistic electrons in the lobes, as previously found. In both lobes, the equipartition magnetic field (Beq ) is bigger than the Inverse Compton value

A New Xmm-newton Observation of Pictor a Radio Lobes Confirms the Non-thermal Origin of the X-ray Emission
X-ray emission from the eastern radio lobe of the FRII Radio Galaxy Pictor A was serendipitously discovered by a short observation of XMM-Newton in 2001. The X-ray spectrum, accumulated on a region covering about half of the entire radio lobe, was well described by both a thermal model and a power law, making non-univocal the physical interpretation. A new XMM-Newton observation performed in 20...
متن کاملRelativistic Flows at the Hotspots of Radio Galaxies and Quasars?
We review the broad band properties of X-ray detected hotspots in radio galaxies and quasars. We show that their collective spectral properties can be unified in a framework involving frequency dependent relativistic beaming and varying orientations to the observer’s line of sight. The simplest dynamic model consistent with this picture is a slowing-down relativistic flow downstream from the ho...
متن کاملThe Chandra view of extended X - ray emission from Pictor A
We discuss the extended X-ray emission seen in three archival Chandra observations, and one archival XMM-Newton observation, of the FRII radio galaxy Pictor A. The overall properties of the X-ray lobes are consistent with the conclusions of earlier workers that the extended X-ray emission is largely due to the inverse-Compton process, and the implied departure from equipartition is in the range...
متن کاملA Chandra Survey of Quasar Jets: First Results
We present results from Chandra X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of a flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like extended structure. Twelve of twenty quasar jets are detected in 5 ks ACIS-S exposures. The quasars without X-ray jets are not significantly different from those in the sample with detected jets except that the extended radio emission is generally fainter...
متن کاملChandra X - ray Observations of Pictor A : High Energy Cosmic Rays in a Radio Galaxy
We report X-ray observations of the nearby, powerful radio galaxy Pictor A with the Chandra Observatory and optical and near uv observations of its western radio hot spot with the Hubble Space Telescope. X-ray emission is detected from the nucleus, a 1. ′ 9 (110 kpc) long jet to the west of the nucleus, the western radio hot spot some 4. ′ 2 (240 kpc) from the nucleus, and the eastern radio lob...
